Wigan Warriors' Head Coach Matt Peet insists his side is still building after confirming his side will be top of the Betfred Super League going to the international break after a comfortable 22-6 win against Wakefield Trinity.
The Warriors are top of the ladder on points difference and it’s the first time they have been on top this campaign, but Peet is ‘aware on how much rugby is yet to be played.’
When asked in the post-match presser about being top going into the break, Peet said: “We’re building, we are aware on how much rugby is yet to be played. So far, we’ve had some good days and we’ve had a few bumps in the road but we keep working hard. I think the fact the break has come now doesn’t really make a difference, hopefully, we’ve got some lads playing for England, if not, it’s an opportunity to freshen up, get a little bit of work done.”
After three games against energetic close rivals in the past few weeks, this was always going to be a different type of game and Peet commented on this. He said: “Different kind of game, different kind of challenge, I thought our start set the tone pretty well, I think that was the danger zone starting the game and obviously Leigh, it took them a while to post points as well last week. Credit to Wakefield, they are a team who are far from giving in, they fight all the way, they make you work for it, I thought our start was very professional.”
There were a few changes in the squad that beat Warrington last week and Kaide Ellis was a main omission that was on everyone’s minds, but Peet confirmed it was a forced change that was out of his control. He told the press: “Kaide actually pulled his hamstring in training this week, so he was set to play, he’s probably going to miss a month.”
Wigan’s next contest will be in two weeks at the MKM Stadium when they face Hull FC on Thursday 4th of May, Live on Sky Sports.
