It is commendable that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited Vinesh Phogat's native village Balali, in Charkhi Dadri district of Haryana, on Wednesday (August 7) to show solidarity for India's missing medal. However, it would have also been thoughtful if the Punjab CM had shown the courtesy of visiting Punjab shooter Arjun Babuta, who narrowly missed the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. His final shot saw the medal slip from his grasp. Babuta lives in Mohali, just a few kilometers from the Punjab CM's official residence in Chandigarh. Securing fourth place at his debut Olympics is no small feat, and support at this stage would have been motivating for him. If Babuta had won a medal, the Punjab CM would not have hesitated to highlight the achievement.

Support for sportspersons should not be limited to political outreach opportunities but should be a genuine concern for political leaders, especially those at the top of affairs.
