As much as the healthcare system is a boon for us, they also result in polluting the environment in the form of biomedical waste or hospital waste. Biomedical or hospital waste is a type of waste that's produced from medical and bodily resources such as obviation of diseases, diagnosis, and medication. It includes pathological waste; infectious waste(which contains sharp objects such as needles, scalpels, lancets, and other objects which can perforate the skin.) ; pharmaceutical waste; cytotoxic waste and the line never ends...
According to the Central Pollution Control Board, about 710 tonnes/day of biomedical waste is still generated which has a devastating effect on our environment.
With the prolonged survival and spread of the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19), the face of littering in the country is changing rapidly.
Any surgical mask, face shield, gloves, shoe covers and personal protective equipment, or PPE, when thrown into landfills, as part of household waste or by roadsides, behind hospitals, on beaches, in parking lots, can see easily. Even in crematoriums, sometimes they are burnt with a pyre.
This waste can harbor the novel coronavirus and other infectious pathogens and can be contagious to humans and the environment.
Poor medical waste management has lead to higher risk of covid in the states like Maharashtra.
Because of this inherent potential risk of COVID-19 litter, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classified it as hazardous biomedical waste as the pandemic took hold in the country.
Since March 2020, CPCB has issued guidelines under the Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) Management Rules, 2016 from time to time and reviewed them to ensure that COVID-19 waste is collected with utmost care. and is transported for "Biomedical Waste Treatment and Disposal". facilities", specially designed to handle bio-hazardous waste from hospitals, health camps, morgues, disease and diagnostic laboratories, but all in vain!!!Because as long as the people of the country turn a blind eye to the problem it'll be impossible to handle the situation. This is high time!!
Taking small actions such as not disposing the waste in an open area will prove to be very efficient. Also, awareness about the same will be very beneficial.
Thankyou!
