Agreed. It’s indeed a significant concern. Thanks for sharing!
Bisexuality and "straight" relationships
Many bisexual people are 'erased' from the LGBT+ community when they enter a "straight" relationship. A bisexual woman may not be seen as a member of the community, for example, when she enters a relationship with a man.
This is bad!
The bisexual community has always helped the LGBT+ community, even when they were pushed out. Bisexual and lesbian women worked hand-in-hand during the AIDS epidemic to help the community, and it is the bisexual community that fights for equal rights today.
In the gender fight, bisexual people are some of the most vocal, especially considering their past with being excluded based on the gender that they're dating.
Another common misconception with bisexual people is that, because bi- means two, they're only attracted to cis men and women. This isn't the case- every person is different, and experiences attraction in their own way.
Bisexual erasure has been an issue in the LGBT+ community for years, and will continue to be so until people accept that someone can be LGBT+ and date someone of the opposite gender. Not all straight-passing relationships are "straight," either- one, or both, of the people could be transgender or otherwise gender non-conforming, and you should never assume that because a couple looks straight they are.
