With the world seeing a variety of supply chain disruptions, bookstores and the publishing industry are not immune. There are shortages of truck drivers, port congestion, and a myriad of other issues that are combining into one issue: books aren’t making it into the hands of readers.
Publishing Twitter is full of stories of print runs being bought up, but not being able to print more until next year. Publishers and suppliers are doing their best to prepare, and many are choosing to focus on printing new releases over reprinting backlist titles. While we might not see empty shelves in bookstores, it might be a good idea to make sure you’ve ordered the books you need for the holiday season. Not on out will pre-ordering ensure that you can read or give what you want, but pre-ordering is so helpful to authors careers.
So if you’re looking to be reading or book-giving in the next few months, do your best to order now.
