The Premier League fixture between Bournemouth and Luton Town has been abandoned after Luton skipper Tom Lockyer collapsed on the field and had to be stretchered to the hospital.

The incident took place in the 59th minute of the game, when Lockyer suddenly collapsed without any player in his vicinity. The Luton staff have now confirmed that the club captain had indeed suffered a cardiac arrest on the field.

The players were then led to their respective locker rooms by referee Simon Hooper while the medical staff from both sides frantically worked to resuscitate Lockyer as quickly as possible.

This is not the first time that the 29-year-old has gone through this medical ordeal. He had earlier collapsed 12 minutes into the Championship playoff final vs Coventry in May. Following further diagnosis, he underwent surgery following which he was given the green light to restart playing football.

An official Luton statement has released, giving an update on Lockyer's overall condition.

The statement reads, "Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher.

He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides.

Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside."

“We all hope and pray for our leader and captain Tom Lockyer, who is thankfully responsive and has been taken to hospital.

"We are sorry to all supporters present that players from both sides were in no state of mind to continue with the game after seeing their much-loved team-mate and friend taken off like that, and staff could not carry on with managing the game in such circumstances having had to deal with the situation."

The game was level at 1-1 when the incident took place, with Dominic Solanke cancelling Elijah Adebayo's early first-half strike.
