Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva delivered a stark message to world leaders on Saturday during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. He emphasized that the world is currently facing an “unprecedented climate emergency.” Lula highlighted the escalating frequency of extreme climate events, including droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires.
At the two-day G20 Summit, world leaders convened amidst what is likely the hottest year in recorded human history. However, concerns loom large regarding the ability of this diverse and divided group to reach a consensus on ambitious climate action.
In July, G20 energy ministers failed to mention coal in their final statement, let alone reach an agreement on a roadmap for phasing out coal usage. Moreover, there was a lack of substantial progress in achieving renewable energy goals. These past setbacks underscore the urgent need for a unified and resolute response to the climate crisis.
The G20 member countries collectively contribute to a significant portion of global GDP, accounting for approximately 85 percent. They also represent a similar share of global climate-warming emissions. As a result, the action taken within the G20 framework holds immense significance for tangible progress in addressing climate change on a global scale.
President Lula’s warning underscores the gravity of the climate emergency. His call to action emphasizes the necessity of concerted efforts and ambitious commitments to mitigate climate change’s devastating impacts. With the world’s attention focused on these pivotal moments, the international community awaits the outcome of the G20 Summit with hope for a resolute response to the planetary climate crisis.
