Let me tell you, thank God the Americans defeated the British in 1783, because their backwards laws and systems are just completely out of hand.
Recently the Commissioner of the London Police said in an interview that the London Police would extradite and jail Americans for committing speech crimes.
What? Talk about complete lunacy.
First off, this Police Commissioner clearly doesn't understand the laws that he's bound by, because the extradition treaty between the US and UK requires that the crime can only be extraditable if it is punishable by one year or more in both countries. And since the US has a First Amendment and doesn't put people in prison for saying mean things, it would be illegal for the UK to extradite an American.
You know, it's actually crazy how there are first-world democracies out there that put people in prison for saying things the government doesn't like. That's what they do in places like Iran, where they'll kill you and imprison you for criticizing the government. In Venezuela, they're trying to do that right now, where they've put out an arrest warrant for opposition leader Maria Machado for spreading apparent election misinformation.
Did you know that in the UK you can go to prison for seven years for hate speech? We're not talking about inciting riots. We're talking about hate speech, pure and simple. If you're an influencer with a very wide reach, and you say some vile, racist thing that gets seen by millions of people, they will literally put you in prison.
Now look, people shouldn't say hateful things, but they also shouldn't go to prison for them either. There are other social non-criminal punishments that are more than adequate for dealing with that kind of speech. But putting somebody in a 10x10 cell for 10% of their life does not fit the crime.
