The Blues from London, is on a spending spree this season. Chelsea announced their sixth signing of the window in Marlo Gusto (who will be loaned back to Lyon for the remainder of the season). The Blues have spent in excess of £150m on new mercenaries. Having bought in exciting young talents like Mudryk, Madueka, Felix, Badiashile, etc. The question arises as to whether, Chelsea, can now find some stability and crawl back up the table.
The target for Graham Potter this season would be to get Chesea back in contention for the top four and go as far in the UCL. The Blues are languishing in 10th position, and are 10 points behind fourth placed United. The lack of creativity in the midfield and the fire power at top has hurt Chelsea the most this season. To add insult to injury, Erling Haaland has bagged more goals than the whole Chelsea squad combined this season.
But there is hope for Potter in the remaining matches of the season. Chelsea's big money signing, Mudryk, impressed in his first outing aginst Liverpool. Jaoa Felix also starred for the Blues before being sent off in his debut. And the former Valencia defender, Badiashile has brought some solidity in the back at Stamford Bridge. With a squad that's brimming with star names, Potter only needs to find the right recipe to get his team back firing again.
Should Chelsea revert to a back four?
Given the squad at Potter's disposal, reverting to a back four could help the former Brighton manager create the perfect balance between attack and defence. With, Silva, Badiahlele and Azpilicueta shielding the goal and Cucurela bombing forward. Potter can play a double pivot with Jorginho playing as a regista and Zakaria/ Kovacic, being the box to box midfielder. Havertz, who has been played out of position, since his arrival at the Bridge, should be deployed as a 10 not 9. Both Mount and Havertz, can operate in the spaces behind the striker and be the creative force in the middle. Since they lack an out-an-out striker, Potter can play Mudryk, Felix and Sterling as a flexible three upfront.
