With spring break underway and warm weather on the horizon, we've gotta discuss something. You know how when you hop into a pool or wade into the water at the beach during your period if you've ever done it before, it kinda feels like the flow stops.
So scientifically, is this a real thing: Does your period stop in water? Or is your period stopping just wishful thinking when you're on a tropical vacation and don't want to believe that you actually have it?
So...does your period actually stop in water? NOPE! It doesn't matter if you're in the water or on the top of a mountain or in a ditch, your period still comes.
Wait, so why does it feel like your period stops in water? Think back to your high school physics class for a sec: You may remember the word "buoyancy."
How does buoyancy affect periods? Your body is still releasing menstrual blood while you are underwater. However, the pressure while your body is underwater (aka buoyancy) slows the flow.
So..no more leaks? You're not going to bleed as much while you're taking a dip, but if you're on a heavy flow day or have a heavier period in general, you could end up with some leakage out of your swimsuit. You still need protection to prevent leakage! Try using a menstrual cup.
Don't let your period stop you from enjoying a swim or a day at the beach.
