Don't let the summer sun fool you! Even during the sunniest months, many of us are still at risk of Vitamin D deficiency. That's why it's important to supplement with Vitamin D, especially for those with limited sun exposure or specific dietary needs.
As we welcome the scorching Indian summer, it's easy to assume that our bodies are getting plenty of vitamin D from the abundant sunshine. However, many Indians, especially those living in urban areas, may still be deficient in this vital nutrient, even during the summer months. Specific groups recommended for year round vitamin D supplementation;
1 Vegans/vegetarians
2 Pregnant Mothers
3 Babies and children
4 Regular Sunscreen Users
5 Knowledge Workers staying indoors
6 People with dark skin - this is because the melanin doesn't let the skin absorb as much UV radiation from the sun.
Can you get enough Vitamin D from foods?
Unfortunately, the answer is NO. As vitamin D is found only in a small number of foods, it can be difficult to get enough from foods alone. The best way to fulfill your Vitamin D quota - Vitamin D3 is the preferred form for consumption as it is already in the active, usable form and important for immune support. Vitamin D2 needs to be converted to D3, which may not be efficient, especially as we age.
Let's prioritize our health and make sure to supplement with the active form, Vitamin D3!
