Delhi witnessed a worrisome surge in its air quality index (AQI), surpassing the 400-mark on Wednesday, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The severity of the situation prompted concerns, categorizing the air quality as 'severe.'
Despite the grim scenario, the central government has decided to observe the situation before enforcing stricter measures under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The decision was made following a review by a sub-committee of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), considering the current air quality, meteorological forecasts, and projections by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
While GRAP measures from Stages I and II continue, including restrictions lifted on January 18, the possibility of reinstating Stage 3 restrictions looms based on the evolving situation. Stage 3 measures involve bans on non-essential construction, certain vehicle operations, and stringent regulations on industries using coal and firewood. The final decision rests on ongoing evaluations of the dynamic air quality conditions in the region.
