Chelsea vs Liverpool is one of the fiercest matchups in the top-flight history. With so much at stake every time, it may not be the same this time on. Top 4 races, title races, cup finals and even champions league knockouts, these two giants have been in the center of it all. Though, this time around, what may be at stake is their dignity, and reputation. We obviously cannot jump to that conclusion based on one season, but it is the ruthlessness of the fans of these clubs that is causing a certain sense of anguish among them.
Since their change in ownership, Chelsea have spent 460 million pounds, far more than any of their competitors. This is being termed as a “long-term” project as the spending has been largely on players under the age of 23. But, understandably so, questions will be asked as the recent results of the club haven’t been up to the mark. The switch from Champions League and Club World Cup winning manager, Thomas Tuchel to Graham Potter hasn’t yet gone to plan. Still, the chairman Todd Boehly has been vocal regarding his support for the young British manager.
Liverpool on the other hand is vying for a fast change in ownership. Qatar has shown clear interest to begin the process of a purchase, but the Fenway Sports Group was quick with their response stating their commitment to the club and that they prefer a "strategic partner" that can bring both scalable capital and some expertise. This is what Jurgen Klopp had to say apropos of this; “Chelsea Obviously sort their problems in a different way”. Seeing the drop in the level of performances of the club, who last season, lost the title to Manchester City by just one point, Jurgen Klopp will definitely want more from his recruiters.
From their last five games, Chelsea just have two wins and a draw, while Liverpool have three wins and are coming into this matchup on the back of two losses. The narrative around the game this time seems a bit different, but it is still a Chelsea Liverpool game. The game kicks off at 6:00PM IST.
