In the midst of the prolonged border standoff in the Ladakh region, China and India have affirmed their commitment to ongoing discussions. During the 28th Meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on China-India Border Affairs, held on November 30, the two nations agreed to conduct the 21st round of commander-level talks at the earliest opportunity to address the unresolved issues.
The meeting, co-chaired by Hong Liang of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and India's Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division, emphasized the necessity of ensuring a stable ground situation and preventing untoward incidents, according to India’s PTI news agency.
While the specifics of disengagement were not explicitly mentioned, the discussions included a comprehensive review of the current situation and open, constructive, and in-depth dialogue on proposals for resolving remaining issues and achieving complete disengagement in eastern Ladakh.
China’s official globaltimes.cn reported that both countries acknowledged positive progress in negotiations and conducted comprehensive discussions on current border-related issues. The nations committed to implementing consensus reached by their leaders, sustaining diplomatic and military negotiations, and promoting a turnaround in the border situation.
The agreement also outlined plans to enhance negotiation and consultation mechanisms, adhere strictly to existing agreements, and collectively maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. Representatives from foreign affairs, national defense, and immigration agencies from both nations participated in the meeting.
The border standoff, ongoing for over three years in eastern Ladakh, has seen extensive diplomatic and military talks. The recent dialogue reflects a continued effort to address lingering issues and maintain stability in the region. The next commander-level talks are anticipated to play a crucial role in promoting resolution and facilitating an early turnaround in the border situation.
