Chris Silverwood Steps Down As Sri Lanka Head Coach
Former English cricketer Chris Silverwood who was serving as the Head Coach of the Sri Lankan Men's side since April 2022 has decided to step down from the post citing personal and family reasons. Silverwood was appointed in 2022 after his stint as England coach ended.
Silverwood was reported to have said, "Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home...It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories."
Silverwood's tenure in Sri Lanka was marked with phases of great success, as well as several forgettable spells marked with defeats. The highlight of his coaching tenure was the Asia Cup victory in 2022, and making it to the Asia Cup Finals in 2023. A fast bowler himself, young fast bowlers like Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana and other flourished under Silverwood's watch.
However, Sri Lanka has coped two forgettable World Cup exits in the last six months. Sri Lanka ended 9th in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and failed to make it to the Super-8s in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
