Chunar is well known for its small and micro scale pottery industries especially clay toys and its historical fort situated on bank of Ganges in Mirzapur district 45 km away from Varanasi. It is a small town.It is spread in an area of 14 sq km.Chunar is an interesting tourist destination in Uttar Pradesh. Clay toys and utensils made of dark brown soil are available for sale. All those, who come here on tourist trip , buy some clay items of their choice. The shooting of Bunti aur Bubli film had done here on top of a moving train.
The fort's history spans from 56 BC and then between Afghan decedent Sher Shah Suri's (1532) rule, the Mughal Empire rule (Humayun, Akbar and many others including Nawab of Awadh) up to 1772, and Marathas in 1782 to 1804. Lastly, the British rule occupied the fort to 1947 when India gained independence.
The Chunar Fort was established by King Vikramaditya of Ujjain for his brother Raja Bhartrihari. According to the Alha Khand, Raja Sahdev made this fort his capital and renamed it Nainagarh in 1029 AD. Mughal ruler, Humayun attacked Chunar fort for the first time in 1532 AD
