Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered Director General of Police GP Singh to initiate a CID inquiry on Monday, February 27, into the Udalguri incident where a dacoit was killed and two police personnel were injured to ascertain factual details of the incident.
On Friday, February 20, a dacoit going by the name of Kenaram Boro was killed in the Daifang area, near Rowta in the Udalguri district of Assam while trying to flee the scene when intercepted during a dacoity.
The deceased had a long history and a criminal record of being involved in dacoity and other crimes in several areas of the region including Meghalaya, Nalbari, Arunachal Pradesh, etc.
Two more police personnel Sub-Inspector Hira Jyoti Pegu and constable Sukumar Barman were also injured during the operation.
On February 25, several media houses reported on Saturday saying that the Rowta Police mistakenly identified and killed the deceased. As per their reports, the person who was killed in the police encounter was Dimbeswar Musahari and not Kenaram Boro who was shot dead when he went to attend a friend’s wedding.
The Superintendent of Police, Udalguri, Supriya Das rubbished the rumours and gave a detailed account of how the operation took place.
She however admitted that there is some unverified news floating regarding the incident and the police have asked the family members to come to the Police Station. “If there is any verification claim, of course, we will take action. But nobody has approached us so far,” she had said.
A magisterial inquiry has been initiated into the incident, as per reports. The Assam CM has also ordered a CID inquiry into the incident and has asked DGP, GP Singh to ensure the completion of the inquiry within two weeks.
