Hopefully cases like these will make these policymakers think a little harder before moving forward on their next crazy idea. Civil Asset Forfeiture is one of the most despicable acts of legal theft that the government commits on a daily basis. Civil Asset Forfeiture is a process by which police can seize your assets, including cash, even when they have just a small suspicion that it may be connected to criminal activity.
Now, taken at face value and under a narrow scope civil asset forfeiture is a good practice because it cuts off a criminal enterprise's ability to use their funds for nefarious purposes. However, in practice, it mostly leads to the forfeiture of money from innocent civilians who are then forced to go through a lengthy and expensive legal process to get their money and assets back.
Now, a major lawsuit has been filed against Indiana law enforcement for running one of the largest, dare I say, criminal schemes of government robbery that has ever been perpetrated. And what Indiana law enforcement has been doing is that they have posted up at one of the largest FedEx hubs in the United States and have been seizing millions of dollars per year in cash from packages based off of ridiculous indications of suspicion, like not having all the data on a box.
Law enforcement that perpetrates this type of somehow legal theft should seriously reconsider their line of work.
Now let me leave you with this one little disturbing fact. In 2014, the amount taken by law enforcement through civil asset forfeiture nationwide exceeded the amount stolen by criminals in robbery. What does that tell you?
