According to a recent government report, greenhouse gases have warmed Australia's climate by about 1.47 degrees Celsius (2.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over the past century. As a result, there have been more mass coral bleaching events, larger and more frequent fires, and heavier rainfall and flash floods.
Al Jazeera reported that the report, which was released on Wednesday, also foresaw further alterations to Australia's climate in the decades to come, including hotter air, warmer oceans, and an extended fire season in the south and east of the nation.
“There is no good news,” tweeted Pep Canadell, a scientist involved in the report’s publication.
“Australia is set for a very bumpy ride well into the second half of this century, and beyond depending on how fast [greenhouse gas] emissions decline.”
The majority of the country's warming, according to the report from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), has occurred since 1950, and each decade since has been hotter than the one before.
According to the report, the eight years between 2013 and 2020 are all among the warmest on record.
