Looking forward to more posts on this!
Lumiere brothers coined the term for the device 'Cinematographe" which was a device used in movie halls/theatres in France to show movies in 1890s. It was one of a kind motion picture system. It has been derived from the Greek word "kinematographos" From these words was the term "Cinema” acquired which literally means a group of moving images.
At first it just meant a movie theatre. The popularity of movies changed its definition and it also became the production of movies/films as an industry or art. With time the meaning of this word has changed significantly, from just a simple term it now encompasses the whole film and even the television industry (even though it’s still up for debate). The rise of OTT platforms has given a boost to the television industry. Movies are also being exclusively produced for these platforms. Thus, the term Cinema is again in the process of change. Many prominent directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Steve Spielberg, etc say that the true Cinema is in the movie going experience and that cant be lived and felt on normal screens at home, the audience in a theatre creates an atmosphere that can’t be encapsulated at homes.
The other side of this debate is that many other great directors such as Matin Scorcsese, David Fincher and many others have had their movies exclusively released on OTTs. This debate has been going on and will linger on. This is like in literature a debate between the rules of the modern and the classics.
This title “Conflict in Cinema” is referring to the conflicts between two opposing ideas in a story. It may be ideological or violent. Conflicts in a story are not just the protagonist vs the antagonist, they can be very complex and subtly hidden into the narrative by the writer, director and actor. Every movie or tv series is built upon a conflict whether that is within the character or among the characters is a characteristic that is to be found by observation. this area of research, I’ll critically appreciate movies, TV series, and comment upon the conflicts in them.
