Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) responded to Trump's 2024 campaign debut by proposing legislation that would prevent him from ever running for political office.
Cicilline, in a letter to House Democrats on November 15th, chastises Trump for "leading an insurgency against the United States," and rightly points out that Trump should be barred from office under the 14th Amendment.
Individuals who participated in an insurgency against the United States are barred from holding political office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. — "No person shall ... hold any office, civil or military, under the United States ... who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States ... to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof," Section 3 reads.
Cicilline, who oversaw Trump's second impeachment trial, used evidence from the Jan. 6 committee and other reporting to argue that Trump participated in an insurgency with the goal of "overturning the lawful 2020 election results."
