Estranged Rajasthan Congress leader Sachin Pilot could not have chosen a better time to get even with his rival Chief Minister Ashok Gelhot. He has launched fast against, what he claims, inaction against corruption of the previous Bharatiya Janata Party government headed by Vasundra Raje Scindia. Pilot has scripted his protest intelligently suggesting that there was an “understanding” between Gelhot and Scindia. Besides, at the protest site, there was no Congress “sign or symbol or flag”. It looked like a “politically anonymous”, if not “orphan” protest.
The rebellion could not have come at a worst time for the Congress in Rajasthan as it prepares for the assembly elections scheduled for later in the year. By and large, Gelhot has managed his affairs well. He may be faced with anti-incumbency, but he has kept the party very much in the fight for the elections ensuring that the party remains in the race and the contest and is not instantly ruled out before the elections. Pilot’s rebellion can cause some damage to the party although not to any large extent.
