Mahagun Moderne, Kitchen for the poor.
The heartbreaking visuals of migrant labour walking 100s of kilometer in scorching sun some barefoot others mending their broken slippers. Some making it to their destinations and others never making it home. While the world was moved by these scenes when Igovernment declared covid lockdown in India, got a residential condominium in sector 78 Noida, come together to feed the poor as they walked on foot to reach their destinations. Residents of Mahagun Moderne , one of the plush addresses in the 70 series sectors in Noida which has around 2500 individually owned apartments, would send thousands of chapattis to Noida Authority’s Roti Bank initiative to provide meals to the daily wagers.
The residents through two separate initiatives one `Mahagun Moderne Angels Kitchen’ managed by the women in the society and another by the Mahagun Moderne Resident Welfare Association contributed around 2500 rotis packet neatly in fours to the Roti Bank and Modi’s Kitchen . …``We contributed around 75000 rotis plus 1500 kgs of dry ration to the authority kitchen and about 250 to 400 packets with 4 Rotis each to Modi Kitchen in the initial days of the pandemic,’’ said Rohit Tyagi , RWA Vice president.
The Mahagun Modern Angels Kitchen, was the first to take the initiative. `` The heartbreaking visuals of labourers walking back to their villages in scorching sun, with their tired and hungry children could move any one ….that was when the women in the society decided to take an initiative to feed atleast 100 such families a day. Initially we didn’t know where to go, so we went in our own capacity and distributed food where ever we could but when Noida authority put out a combined kitchen our job became easier,’’ said Smita Bhargava Pant, one of the ladies who conceived the idea.
The group managed to pack 1000 to 1200 rotis daily . ``We started on April 12th and went on till June 7th,’’ added Pant.
The Angels Kitchen is still active and alive . ``In the society if we are informed about a family’s illness, we contact them and incase they are unable to cook, we take three meals for them till the family members get better and can take care of the chores,’’ Pant said.
