After creating havoc, Cyclone Remal, which battered the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, has weakened into a depression over eastern Bangladesh, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.
However, the storm's impact is far from over, with reports of widespread damage to infrastructure and property emerging from the affected regions.
The weakened system is expected to move further east and lose strength within the next 12 hours. However, heavy rains will continue to lash parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, until tomorrow.
Cyclone Remal made landfall on Sunday evening, bringing powerful winds and heavy rain to coastal areas between Sagar Island in India and Khepupara near Mongla in Bangladesh. After the cyclone made landfall on Sunday night, it unleashed devastation on both sides of the border.
In West Bengal alone, nearly 29,500 houses, primarily in the south, were partially or completely destroyed. Over 2,140 trees were uprooted, and nearly 1,700 electric poles were knocked down.
