Great write-up, Matt! Interesting read 👏
Darwin Nunez. A decisive World Cup asset for Uruguay
Darwin Nunez. So heavily spoken about, and often so harshly treated. A player with such a presence, hunger to get himself involved, who’s a complete nightmare to face, isn’t one who should be taken lightly.
Profile:
Darwin Nunez is a 23 year old, physical forward who predominantly plays off the left and through the centre - useful in many different systems but even more effective alongside a linker.
A very strong player, with great movement, very good channel runner with his electric speed which is rarer for his 6’2 frame, and an all round nuisance for defenders.
After a tough start, the Uruguayan forward has shown very promising signs, including a brace in his last club game before the World Cup, vs Southampton.
Inevitability
Liverpool’s record signing always feels bound to hit the ground running at some stage.
The flaws so far for the forward is his finishing more than anything, which albeit decisive feels technique and confidence based, and the service provided to accumulate multiple chances per 90 is what’s more important.
His goal tally at Benfica last season speaks volumes about this & what he can provide. A Uruguayan from Portugal to Liverpool, after all does deserve time to adapt.
A platform to shine:
Darwin isn’t one who seems to allow criticism without retaliation. What better way to prove your critiques wrong than at your first World Cup, at an exciting prospect of a Uruguay side, with the likes of Suarez, Cavani, Bentancur, Torreira, Gimenez & others.
Playing off of Suarez/ Cavani will perfectly suite his style. At only 23, Darwin is a very proactive and chaotic player, in a very good way.
Very hard to pickup, rapid, raw but very exciting, and a nailed on starter for the South Americans.
One I back to have a great tournament, and be amongst the highest scorers in the tournament.
Darwin Nunez - a decisive asset for Uruguay.
