In a shocking move, David de Gea is reportedly going to miss the FIFA World Cup 2022 as he has not been named in Spain’s 55-man provisional squad.
The showpiece event will get underway in Qatar next month. Spain will pick their main squad of 26 members from the preliminary squad. Although the list has five goalkeepers, de Gea is not one of them.
If observed thoroughly, one could predict that it was bound to happen as the Manchester United’s goalkeeper made his last presence for the national side in November last year, where he remained an unused substitute.
In addition to that, the 31-year-old played his last game as a starter two years back against Ukraine. In that encounter, Spain lost 1-0 and many pointed out that it was de Gea’s poor positioning that led to the only goal.
According to AS, Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simon, Brighton's Robert Sanchez and Brentford's David Raya are the three shot-stoppers who will fly to Qatar for the marquee event.
Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga and Getafe's David Soria have been kept as reserve players to fill the position in case of any injury or illness prior to the event.
David de Gea’s United career under scanner
If the national team woes are enough, David de Gea’s club career is also in jeopardy. His contract with the English club is coming to an end in the summer next year. There has been speculation over the extension of services from the club's end.
Reportedly, boss Erik ten Haq wants to replace the veteran goalkeeper. Even though the Spaniard has featured in all the games since the Dutch manager took over the prestigious role at Old Trafford.
After a commendable 3-0 win in the Europa League against Sheriff on Thursday, the Reds will next lock horns with West Ham in a Premier League fixture on Sunday.
