David Wiese Bids Adieu to International Cricket
Namibia all-rounder David Wiese has bid farewell to international cricket. The tall wily speedster began his cricket career as a player for South Africa, and spent the later half of his international career representing Namibia.
David Wiese made his T20 debut for South Africa in 2013 against Sri Lanka. He was being seen as a prospective replacement of the legendary all-rounder, Jacques Kallis. A not-so-great outing in Sri Lanka put Wiese out of the international circuit for quite some time. He was recalled into the international side in 2015, when he made his ODI debut. He also went on to represent the Proteas in the 2016 T20 World Cup. In 2021, Wiese became eligible to play for Namibia based on his ancestry. He soon became their most important player, finishing games with his power-hitting and bowling the difficult death overs.
David Wiese has represented 15+ teams through his career and has played in T20 leagues across the Globe. He has played for IPL teams like the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the reigning IPL champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders. He has represented Sussex in English county cricket for a substantial amount of time.
Wiese told to the media after his last international game against England at the ongoing T20 World Cup: "Next year's T20 World Cup is still two years away, I'm 39 years old now, so in terms of international cricket, I don't know if there's much left in me. Obviously, I still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I've still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play....But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I've had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time."
