It's the death anniversary of the true feminist icon of India, Savitribai Phule. She was just not a woman but a reformer who changed the dynamics of education in the 19th century.
She's India’s first woman teacher, a social reformer, poet, and crusader for women empowerment.
Throughout her life she has broken multiple stereotypes such as inter-caste marriages and performing the last rites of husband, to name a few.
She was banished by the society and also faced a lot of hate and violence from other people for her revolutionary ideas but at a time when India was against the education of women, and education was considered to be privileged Savitribai acted as a messiah and emphasized on secular education.
Her husband Jyotirao Phule has been her biggest supporter. Though he married Savitribai at a young age but he helped her attain good education, and also helped her dream of living in a country where women get right to live a good life and attain education. She set up country’s first women’s school in Pune and became first woman teacher in the country.
From taking care of poor, the women, the downtrodden, widows Savitribai has done everything. She has set up care centres to prevent female infanticide and killing of widows and pregnant rape victims. And also supported inter caste marriages.
Savitribai Phule was truly a revolutionary woman. INDIA WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HER FOR HER EXEMPLARY CONTRIBUTION.
