Death of a Salesman directed by Volker Schlöndorff adapted from the play written by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller wrote the screenplay for thr movie and made some minor changes. Its stars Dustin Hoffman as the lead character, Willy Loman, who is a salesman past his prime. He shares an esnteaged relationship with both his sons and is not happy with them as they've done nothing major in their lives. Its a story thats talks about the falacy of American dream. The conflict revolves around the concept of the American dream and consumerism. The movie was made for T.V. it had 10 emmy nominations and won three.
Willy get frequent flashbacks where he sees people and events from the past. It doesn't matter who's with him, it starts anywhere. His son Biff had a good chance at football but he flunked the senior year and never went to college, which was because he found out about his father's affair. Willy has been in 3-4 car crashes, his eyesight isn't getting better and his boss isn't giving him a position in the City. Willy sees his brother Ben in many of the flashbacks, he thinks of him as his idol.
Willy and Ben are contrasts, according to the American dream if you work hard , you'll succeed in America but Willy doesn't realise his dream. He raises his children with all the right ideals of the dream but they don't succeed in life. Biff wants to live away from the city as he thinks thats where he'll thrive. In the end, Willy kills himself in a car crash, thinking that Biff will use the insurance money to start a business but Biff doesn't want to become a businessman. Happy follows the footsteps of his father.
Willy Loman is a character that has been made to show the fallacy of the American dream and a capitalist society, in which everything is looked at as a commodity. This play and movie written by Arthur Miller are a critique of the greedy capitalist society and he tries to show the flaws of such capitalist thinking.
