Deborah Smith is a British translator of Korean fiction. In 2015, Smith shot to prominence with her translation of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian, a dark, mysterious novel about a Korean housewife’s decision to give up meat. The translation won Kang and Smith the International Man Booker Prize, and won Smith the Arts Foundation Award for Literary Translation. Along with a second work by Kang, Smith has also translated several other Korean works, including Bae Suah’s Recitation and The Accusation by the North Korean dissident writer Bandi. She is also the founder of the Tilted Axis Press, dedicated to translating contemporary international literature
