The whole concept of Misfits is beyond binary notions of masculinity and femininity in itself, because it is non-gendered. I don't think we want to challenge anything. Rather, I think we’re working from a space of wanting to accept.
I go by she/her, and if someone who goes by he/him wanted to come along and support, they'd be very welcome. As a charity and as a movement in terms of fitness, it's less about challenging ideas and more about supporting.
I hope that there can be a movement towards more inclusive LGBTQIA+ groups. It's even rare to find a lesbian group. It just seems to be dominated by the gay male community.
It's a catch-22 and just keeps going like that, with more people joining. I get messages from groups saying, “Can you be part of our calendar because it's just gay men.”
So I hope that we can provide more actual physical spaces because at the moment, all gyms are gendered in terms of their changing rooms, as far as I know.
And fitness is very gendered with its elements of sexism. Being a woman in the gym is hard. Being a non-binary person in the gym is almost impossible because of the associations with how we look.
A lot of non-binary people don't really think about how they look. It's not aesthetics. So, I think there needs to be more physical spaces for the less representative parts of the community to be able to train in.
