The water situation in Delhi doesn't seem to be improving, as the national capital is grappling with a severe water shortage of 50 million gallons per day (MGD), prompting the city government to urge residents to conserve water.
Despite efforts to tackle the issue, the problem persists, with the tanker mafia worsening the situation by siphoning off water from supply channels.
As the water crisis intensifies, the Supreme Court has advised the AAP government to seek additional water from the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) on humanitarian grounds. This recommendation comes amid widespread distress, particularly in unauthorized colonies, slums clusters where residents are struggling to secure enough water for daily needs.
Lt Governor V K Saxena has directed the Delhi Police to patrol the 15-kilometer stretch of the Munak canal to prevent the tanker mafia from stealing water. The canal, entering Delhi from Bawana and supplying water to the Haiderpur Treatment Plant, is a crucial source of water for the city.
Delhi Water Minister Atishi talked about the city's water shortage cannot be resolved by merely cracking down on the tanker mafia. She also said that the DJB's tanker fleet, which supplies water to areas without pipeline access, is already stretched thin. "Even if the tanker mafia were entirely restrained, it would save only a fraction of the required water," she added.
The BJP has criticised the AAP government for its handling of the water crisis. BJP leader Bansuri Swaraj accused the AAP government of failing to prevent water leakage and wastage, while allegedly protecting the tanker mafia. Atishi refuted these claims, asserting that the Delhi government has been proactive in addressing the issue.
