If Kamala Harris isn’t the next presidential nominee, Democrats will likely face a major cash issue.
Biden’s campaign account currently holds roughly $96 million. With Biden bowing out of the race, since Harris’s name is on the paperwork, only she would be able to use the money.
If she doesn’t get the nomination, the new nominee will have to start from zero dollars and raise funds themselves, with the $96 million in the current campaign being transferred to the DNC or donated Democratic PACs. Regardless of who it goes to, they will be far more restricted in how that money can be used. For example, PACs cannot coordinate with candidates.
Getting money likely won’t be a problem though, as they can easily get funds by securing loans, which will give them access to immediate funding, and then they can pay those loans off as new donations come in.
But with so little time left in between the democratic national convention and the general election, it seems that democrat’s worries may soon begin to compound.
