"My conversations with Dawood Ibrahim"
In the afternoon of July 23, 1993 an unmarked car of the Delhi Police Crime Branch weaved its way through the chaotic traffic on New Delhi’s Sardar Patel Marg. The eyes of Inspector Prithvi Singh—leader of the police team—were fixed on a sky blue Maruti driving ahead. The officer waited patiently as the two cars crossed Dhaula Kuan roundabout and were now on National Highway 8. He asked his police driver to go for the kill as he found the flanks on the left of the road wide enough. The man-on-the-wheel knew the drill just too well. He overtook the car in front, swerved left suddenly and forced it to stop. The police team jumped out of their vehicle with their handguns aimed at Maruti’s occupants and ordered them to come out. Amit Tyagi, a notorious gangster of Western Uttar Pradesh wanted in several cases of murder, armed robberies etc, realized his game was up and came out with his hands raised as if in prayer. His young associate Anil Tyagi and a third person, who disclosed his name as Shyam Kishore, also gave themselves up.Their personal search and a search of the car, however, led to no incriminating recoveries.
The Crime Branch informer had been spot on in his tip-off on Amit Tyagi. The two Tyagis were on their way to the airport to drop Shyam Kishore leaving for Bombay.
But who was Shyam Kishore? The name did not ring a bell in the veteran Inspector’s ears.
Cross-checking with Delhi Police Crime Record Office didn’t help either. However, the sleuth continued with Tyagis’ interrogation as the officer had enough dope on them. The U.P. gangsters soon disclosed their companion Shyam Kishore’s suspected links with D-company (as Dawood Ibrahim’s Mumbai underworld is commonly referred to).
Apparently, Shyam Kishore had been tasked with the job of procuring weapons for Dawood’s
men for which he had contacted Amit Tyagi. It came to light that D’s men were setting up a
base in Delhi.
