The Indian Space Research Organisation has left it's mark with revolutionary Space missions, the world knows ISRO, but ISRO has a much larger presence and not just limited to India.

Its network spans from the narrow bylanes of Bengaluru to the frigid world of Antarctica.

Yes, you read that right. Isro runs a station on the continent that remains frozen on the edge of the planet, as reported by IndiaToday.

The Antarctica Ground Station for Earth Observation Satellites (AGEOS), located at Bharati Station in the Larsemann Hills of Antarctica, is a state-of-the-art facility that has been in service for over a decade.

AGEOS receives data from various Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites, including CARTOSAT-2 Series, SCATSAT-1, RESOURCESAT-2/2A, and CARTOSAT-1. The collected data is then transferred to the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) in Shadnagar, near Hyderabad, India.

This advanced ground station supplements ISRO's Earth Observation (EO) data collection, significantly enhancing the country's capabilities in remote sensing.

The AGEOS station is continuously operated and maintained by a team of ISRO engineers who are regularly deputed to Bharati Station. Their expertise ensures the smooth functioning of the station, contributing to the successful execution of ISRO's remote sensing missions.

One of the unique advantages of having an Earth Station in the Polar region is the increased visibility it offers. AGEOS can observe up to 10 passes per day for each mission, providing a comprehensive view of the Earth's surface.

This strategic location allows for global remote sensing data acquisition, a crucial aspect in various fields such as agriculture, water resources, urban planning, rural development, mineral prospecting, environment, forestry, ocean resources, and disaster management.

In addition to its primary function, AGEOS also houses a C-Band station commissioned at the National Centre for Antarctica & Ocean Research (NCAOR) in Goa, India.

This station establishes a dedicated communication link for round-the-clock operations, supporting video conferencing, video streaming, and internet browsing applications.
