Fans went into a state of shock on Twitter amid the use of AI technology at the FIFA World Cup 2022 and expressed their opinion on the current technology which began with the host nation Qatar's opening match against Ecuador.
What triggered commotion among the fans was Ecuador's goal against Qatar, disallowed for offside, which the Ecuadorian professional footballer, Enner Valencia believed to be in his favour. But the final decision after VAR review revealed that it had been overturned because Valencia's right leg's lower portion was in an offside position. The point of the offside rule is to prevent attacking players from perpetually camping in front of the opponent’s goal.
But is it justified to blame a sports technology used in the Al Rihla football by Adidas or semi-automated offside technology?
“I’m going to have high blood pressure if it continues like this for the rest of the month,” said former England and Newcastle United footballer Alan Shearer, during the TV broadcast, after the VAR call to disallow Ecuador’s goal.
