I could personally connect with many scenes in Do Aur Do Pyaar as it threw that old question again – why do people knock on other doors for love while being with someone you chose for life? Kayva (Vidya Balan) and Ani (Pratik Gandhi) are in a declining marriage and they live like roommates in their apartment. But they don’t seem enemies to each other. And the kind of infidelity celebrated in this film is quite charming. Both of them enjoy their private zones with no apparent guilt. I loved the steamy scenes of Kavya-Vikram(Sendhil Ramamurthy) more compared to a little shy Ani-Nora (Ileana D'Cruz) romance. I don’t even remember when I saw Ileana last in a film. Acting has improved, anyway.
Shirsha Guha’s romantic comedy Do Aur Do Pyaar based on The Lovers (2017) discards the right-wrongs of marriage as an institution in Indian culture. As Kavya says– I always wanted love, so moved to wherever I got it. Ani’s side of the story is more political, he never felt a fiercely Independent Kavya needed him in life whereas Nora is a weak and unstable artist seeks shelter in him. How strange and fragile the reasons to fall apart!
Some parts of this film look like beautiful shorts, the couple talks with gags and double-meaning, Vidya’s sensuous dance at an old club in her hometown, that night they recollect each other, its repeats in their Mumbai apartment, the lies they cook up to avoid their new-found partners- reverses some concepts usual with this genre. Cool acting by Vidya who takes the lead over a little timid Pratik and the Impressive chemistry between the two couples consumes the screen.
Even your grandpap’s death can prompt you to revisit the aspirational life you dreamt of once with someone you disown now. It’s only when you have it again, you realize how you missed it. Leaving a familiar soul and space is very intimidating. At some Buddha moment, the reinvented selves bunk temporary fancies and reunite. Do Aur Do Pyaar walks away from this cliché end, yet that’s the tone of speech between Kavya and Ani.
