It’s Children’s Day and the Birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India who was also fondly called ‘Chacha Nehru.’ Pandit Nehru was very fond of children hence his birthday every year on November 14 is celebrated as Children’s Day in India.
He believed that children are the core foundation of any society, so they should be nurtured in a suitable environment. In one of his speeches, he said, “the children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the country’s future."
Pandit Nehru worked toward the development and well-being of children throughout his life. He strongly advocated that a country will only flourish when there is prosperity for children and the youth.
The IITs and the AIIMS of today are contributions of Pandit Nehru. He played an important role in transforming the country’s education sector and strongly believed in scientific knowledge and propagated reasoning and rationality as the basis of all learning.
He also founded the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and National Physical and Chemical Laboratories (NPCL) which are one of premier institutions of the country today.
Children’s Day signifies that every child deserves equal rights to healthcare, education, and sanitation, irrespective of their caste, creed, or financial position.
This day is celebrated to recognise the needs of the children. Schools and educational institutions organise various programmes on this day to make children feel special. Different competitions, debates, games, seminars, and fun activities are held involving children. It’s a day to sow the seeds of virtue in the future leaders of the nation.
