What is hair porosity? Hair porosity refers to the capacity of your hair to soak up and hold onto moisture. The outermost layer of your hair, which is called the cuticle, is affected by the porosity of your hair, determining the ease with which oils and moisture can move in and out.
How to determine your hair type based on its porosity?
1 High Propensity Hair - Hair having highly porous cuticle layer for moisture absorption but causing the hair lose moisture as quickly.
2 Medium Propensity Hair - A perfectly balanced hair having a penetrable cuticle layer that grants entry to moisture.
3 Low propensity Hair - Hair having tightly closed cuticle layer that prohibits treatment and water absorption.
EASY METHOD YOU CAN USE TO DETERMINE YOUR HAIR'S POROSITY LEVEL;
The Water Test - Take a small section of clean, dry hair and place it in a glass of water. Let it sit for 2-4 minutes.
- Low - If hair floats, it does not easily allow moisture in or out of hair.
- Normal - Hair easily accepts and retains moisture.
- High - If the hair sinks, it easily allows moisture in or out of hair due to cracks and holes along the hair shafts.
