#Doctorwarriors Dr. Darakshan: “besides all the negativity during those tough times of covid, people came together to help the needy”.
Dr. Darakshan Khan is a gynecologist from Dehradun. She calls the whole covid era to be a shocking experience. Being a working woman and a doctor she was always worried to carry the infection home. Unfortunately her nightmare turned into a reality when her mother-in-law and both her kids got infected with the virus.
She recalls those days to be very challenging for her because her mother-in-law’s situation got very severe and she had to be hospitalized. Finding a bed was difficult for the whole of India, so was it for Dr Darakshan.
Second wave, according to her, was even worse especially for the remote areas in India. People in these areas weren’t aware of the virus and were casual about it. When the situation got worse in these areas there was a lack of medicines and awareness on how to keep everyone safe.
She used to get calls from outside Delhi for consultations; thanks to digitalization she was able to help her patients via video calls.
While on duty, she would feel very disheartened and had a sense of helplessness for her patients who knew they were in a bad situation and wanted to live longer. The pandemic created a situation where patients were giving up mentally before their bodies would give up. Despite Dr Darakshan trying her best, she was helpless at times.
Long working hours didn’t discount the Doctors from managing family affairs. Dr Darakshan had to balance work and house even more diligently during the pandemic.
There were plenty of patients and experiences she remembers during the whole pandemic era, but the case of the young girl still haunts her. She vividly recalls the young girl calling her from the US to ask about her parent’s friends who lived in Baroda.
To be continued…
