President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly selected two prominent China hawks—Marco Rubio and Mike Waltz—to serve as his secretary of state and national security adviser, respectively.
Marco Rubio, a Florida senator and former presidential candidate, has long been known for his hawkish foreign policy stance, particularly regarding China, Iran, and Cuba. While Rubio’s views have softened over time to align with Trump’s more restrained foreign policy approach, he remains a strong advocate for confronting geopolitical rivals. Rubio, who was considered a leading contender for Trump’s vice-presidential pick in 2016 before JD Vance was chosen, has also advised Trump on foreign policy matters, including preparing him for debates during the 2020 election. If confirmed, Rubio would become the first Latino to serve as America’s top diplomat. His likely appointment highlights a broader shift within the Republican Party, with many of Trump’s allies now supporting a more restrained, less interventionist foreign policy than the hawkish stance that dominated the party in previous years.
Mike Waltz, a Republican congressman from Florida and Trump loyalist, is expected to be appointed national security adviser. A former Green Beret and Pentagon policy adviser, Waltz has been outspoken about the need for the U.S. to prepare for potential conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region, especially with China. He has also criticized the Biden administration’s handling of Afghanistan and has called for a more robust military stance in the region. A decorated combat veteran, Waltz has served multiple tours in Afghanistan, earning four Bronze Stars. Before his congressional career, he worked as a defense contractor and served in key advisory roles under the Bush administration.
In other appointments, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has been selected as the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Noem, who was once considered a potential vice-presidential candidate, has also made headlines for her controversial past leadership decisions.
