Thanks for the dialogue Matteo!
It’s an important one as it touches on a concern that often arises in debates - “free speech” and equivalencies relating to it.
The idea of “free speech” is foundational to our nation and identity as Americans. At the same time, that freedom has not been equally extended to all Americans from the nation’s start. Also, the protection of free speech is a governmental mandate, but not extended to private companies with the same level of accountability.
In the Carano circumstance, I disagree about a double standard because she made repeated statements that conflicted with Disney’s brand policies and reputation. She had ample opportunities to correct/retract/amend those statements and did not. Her attempt to correct her statement with Ben Shapiro was too little too late, though definitely better late than never.
Sadly, while we aspire to free speech, the reality is that “free speech” always comes at a cost and that cost is the consequences of what we say. This underlies the importance of everyone understanding and valuing the power of speech, of their words, and of their position (especially those with a platform to be heard - like Carano).
It’s unfortunate that her intentions to unite were not more evident at the start of her messaging. Here’s to more thoughtful and unifying free speech going forward and on platforms like Pixstory!
Hey Derek, I really liked to read what you had to
say and i was able to learn more about this issue and I am glad to hear your perspective on this issue. While I agree that Gina Carano should have stepped back after she was warned for her tweets by Disney, I think that everyone, regardless of race, gender, or political side should be able to express their freedom of speech even though it may not sit well with a certain audience. While Disney had every right to fire her since they are a private company, that does not discard the fact that they should give the same standard for who they fire based on what they post on social media. Pedro Pascal who stars in the Mandalorian with Gina Carano posted a picture comparing the detained immigrants from Mexico to the Jewish children in the holocaust. While these are two very different circumstances, it does not disregard the fact that Disney changes their standard for what is “hate speech” and what is not. I believe that everyone should believe what they want with this issue and my intent is not to try to prove you wrong but to simply provide my perspective on this topic. Thank you for reading. :)
