Dr Prakash B. Amte is the second son of
Magsaysay Awardee Baba Amte carrying forward his family's legacy in philanthropy, animal conservation and overcoming taboo and fear of Leprosy. Moved by the animalistic living of people of Hemalkasa in Western India's forests, he dedicated his life (with his wife's active and unconditional support) for the upliftment of tribes and saving wild animals from human cruelty. He got Magsaysay Award for "Community Work" in the form of Lok Biradari Prakalp amongst the Mandia Gonds in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra and neighbouring states of Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.

HIS Contribution to Tribal and Animal Healthcare in India ;

Awakened the tribes of Gadchiroli and taught them agricultural techniques to reduce their dependence on hunting for survival. He also transformed the region by performing emergency surgeries even in absence of electricity, established hospitals with modern facilities and brightened those dense regions. His conversion of his backyard into an orphanage "Animal Ark" to nurture deserted and injured animals has reduced their numbers in the last 40 years. His autobiographies, Prakashvata (pathways to Light) and Raanmitra (Jungle friends) inspire generations for social work.

His hard and compassionate work demonstrated a powerful message of peaceful co-existence of man and animals demonstrated by the inclusion of sick baby animals into human families. His pioneering social work reached out to the masses through his biopic titled "Dr Prakash Amte-The Real Hero"encouraging us all.
