In the early hours of Saturday, 27th Aqrab, an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Badakhshan province in Afghanistan. The United States Geological Survey reported the epicenter to be the Ashkasham district in Badakhshan.
This region has experienced seismic activities before. Earlier this year, on March 23, two earthquakes rocked Tajikistan, causing damage to hundreds of houses and livestock deaths. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) swiftly responded, pledging humanitarian aid and planning shelters for nearly 2,000 families affected by a 5.9 magnitude quake in Paktika and Khost provinces on June 22.
Beyond natural disasters, Afghanistan faces security challenges. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is actively addressing security threats originating from the country, particularly concerning the potential resurgence of terrorist groups since the Taliban assumed power. While there's currently no overarching military security problem, measures are being implemented due to the unstable situation, especially in the northern areas bordering CSTO member states.
As of now, there are no reported casualties or damages from the recent earthquake in Badakhshan province. Investigations and assessments are underway to determine the impact of this seismic event.
