Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi emphasized the urgency to shape future arrangements to achieve universal goals. These challenges are unprecedented and revolve around the multilateral system founded on the principles of the UN Charter and international law, and focus on enhancing the efficacy of international institutions in responding effectively to crises and challenges.
He noted the importance of the G20 in addressing global fiscal imbalances, and realigning international financial institutions with sustainable solutions for structural issues plaguing the developing countries.
Highlighting his chairmanship role in the African Union’s Development Agency, NEPAD, President Sisi stated the specific goals for bolstering their nations, mainly focused on enhancing continental economic integration, expediting the implementation of African Development Agenda, enabling the Continental Free Trade agreement, and mobilization of resources for high-priority areas such as infrastructure, energy, communication, and food security.
The President underscored Egypt’s role in readjusting the international climate agenda during its presidential tenure of the 27th session of the climate conference. The hallmark of this effort is the call for the establishment of a fund to offset climate damage and losses. Along with undertaking crucial steps towards making Egypt a regional hub for energy trade, Egypt also announced the initiation of an international forum to finance green hydrogen projects, the future fuel.
As a response to the food crisis, Egypt expressed readiness to host a global grain storage and trade center, complementing the ongoing joint efforts to combat this challenge, and in support of multilateral international action.
President Sisi expressed optimism that the current G20 summit would undertake decisive measures to tackle hurdles that hinder economic recovery and impede sustainable development. He hopes for a strong message to emerge from the summit that rises to the level of responsibility entrusted to the leaders to fulfill the aspirations of their nations.
Lastly, he commended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his diligent efforts during India’s presidency of the G20 summit, culminating in hosting the ongoing summit. Alongside, he congratulated India on their successful lunar landing and welcomed the well-deserved induction of the African Union as a G20 member.
