Elon Musk's neurotechnology company, Neuralink, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully installing a brain implant in its first human recipient. Musk announced the development on Tuesday, expressing optimism about the "promising neuron spike detection" observed in the initial results.
The implant, part of Neuralink's groundbreaking investigational medical device trial named 'PRIME,' aims to establish direct communication channels between the brain and computers. The first product from Neuralink, named 'Telepathy' by Musk, is anticipated to revolutionize human-computer interaction.
The study primarily targets individuals with quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injuries and those with ALS. Neuralink's technology involves the use of the N1 implant and R1 surgical robot, enabling individuals to control external devices through their thoughts.
During the surgical process, the ultra-fine and flexible threads of the N1 Implant are placed in a brain region controlling movement intention using the R1 Robot. The implant is designed to be cosmetically invisible and wirelessly transmits recorded brain signals to an app, decoding movement intention. Neuralink's ultimate goal is to empower people with paralysis to control computers using their thoughts alone.
Founded in 2016, Neuralink's successful implantation represents a significant step toward realizing Musk's vision of establishing a direct interface between the human brain and technology.
