England Football Board has decided that the England Women’s team will wear blue shorts instead of white at this year’s summer Women's World Cup tournament after many players expressed period concerns. This new home kit will be worn by the players for the first time during Thursday's Finalissima match against Brazil at Wembley. The home shirt is white with some blue borders and blue shorts, while the away kit is fully blue.
Players such as Beth Mead and Georgia Stanway spoke about their concerns while wearing the white shorts during England's victorious Euro 2022 tournament. The Football Association denied the request of players about changing the colour but the board assured both players that if the majority want this to happen, they would surely change the colour in the future.
During that time, the statement said, “We recognise the importance and want our players to feel our continued support on this matter. We have appealed to international tournament organisers to keep this subject in consideration and allow for greater flexibility on kit colour combinations."
Clubs such as Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea's women's teams have also decided to change their shorts’ colour from their respective home kits because of these period concerns. Several other countries have also had their kits redesigned by Nike just before the World Cup and these shorts contain a leak-protection liner for protection during the time of periods.
To this new motive, Vice President of Nike women's global sport apparel, Jordana Katcher said, “We are thrilled to offer this new innovation to all athletes playing for Nike-sponsored federations this summer. Professional footballers play two 45-minute halves without breaks. Many told us they can spend several minutes on-pitch concerned that they may experience leakage from their period. When we showed them this innovation, they told us how grateful they were to have this short to help provide confidence when they can't leave the pitch."
