Very interesting theme
Wow! It is good to see such subjects being taken up in Bollywood now, that too with a good storyline, and no wonder Gajraj Rao breathes life into every role he gets. Such a fab actor!
One of the most overlooked subjects!
Atmaram, a respected old man from Ujjain is suffocated with a sex secret of his life. When he exchanges his dilemma with a peer, he advises him to go for a Bhajan. An easy entry to heaven, else what’s ideal at this point in his life? Probably or definitely his sons, daughters, daughter-in-laws, grandkids, neighbor aunties… all would suggest the same option. But Atmaram, a widower now and has been sort of for the past 21 years with a paralyzed wife badly wants it as he is quite sure he has got only one life.
His backstory was hidden from the family. Even the passport was. But truth has this worst behaviour of coming out at an odd hour. Atmaram was caught by his sons and the plot runs a flashback now.
As a story thread, it’s really relevant in our society considers old people have no body needs. All they need is empathy. Atmaram covers long distances daily riding his bicycle. He is physically fit. He has sex needs but facing erectile dysfunction. Though worried about the taboo it would bring to his peaceful life in the form of samaj (society) and his family, he managed to motivate himself with the help of a youngster (Divyendu Sharma -decent performance) in the locality and imagined how it would be at a local brothel. Obviously, he lost his sleep. So, he moves to Bangkok for a carefree boom boom. Until this part, Thai Massage was moving okay with average humor and wit. Script goes bland at times.
Sequences after Atmaram reaches Bangkok turn sentimental. Director Mangesh Hadawale reverts to an old track here barring a clear humorous ground ideal for the script. Gajraj Rao is a perfect casting to enact an innocent, naïve man landed in another country with a real need. He shouldered the entire movie. The contrast effect of a youngster and an oldie in real scenarios was also impressive. What went wrong was a deviation from a progressive theme with the potential of a powerful message.
Do we still need a veil to say - I want sex?!
