Harry Maguire has confirmed that he is no longer the captain of Manchester United after discussions with manager Erik ten Hag.
The decision comes after Maguire's limited appearances under Ten Hag's management last season, with the central defender making only eight Premier League starts. This led to speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
Maguire expressed his disappointment in a Twitter post but pledged to continue giving his all whenever he wears the Manchester United shirt. He thanked the fans for their support during his time as captain, which he described as a huge privilege and one of the proudest moments of his career.
Bruno Fernandes was often appointed captain in Maguire's absence last season and is expected to be given the permanent role. The club stated that the new captain will be announced by the manager in due course.
Maguire, who joined Manchester United from Leicester for £80 million in 2019, has made over 170 appearances for the club. Despite the captaincy change, he remains committed to the team and is prepared to support the new captain going forward.
I for one believe that giving the armband to Bruno, who is very vocal and commanding from his teammates on the pitch, will be a really positive choice from Erik Ten Haag. As the club’s top goal keeper also has left after many years at the club, Bruno seems the perfect candidate to lead the team ahead.
