Let me help you to get to know this term in a much better way!
Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which an individual or a group seeks to make someone doubt their perception, memories, feelings, or reality. This manipulation aims to undermine the victim’s confidence and create confusion, leading them to question their sanity or judgment. Gaslighting often occurs in relationships, where one person tries to gain power and control over another by distorting their sense of reality
Some examples include :
1 Countering: This is when someone questions a person’s memory. They may say things such as, “Are you sure about that? You have a bad memory.”
2 Withholding: This involves someone pretending they do not understand the conversation, or refusing to listen, to make a person doubt themselves.
3 Trivialising: This occurs when a person disregards how someone else feels. They may accuse them of being “too sensitive.”
4 Denial: Denial involves a person refusing to take responsibility for their actions.
5 Diverting: With this technique, a person changes the focus of a discussion by questioning the other person’s credibility.
6 Stereotyping: A person may intentionally use negative stereotypes about someone’s gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, or age to gaslight them.
